• Details:  This pretty plate is in the very popular, very much imitated, Moss Rose pattern, Norleans called it "Old Rose".  It is fine porcelain and features a scattering of pink roses alongside closed and semi-opened buds.  There are also very thin red stems with light blue/gray leaves.  This plate has a lovely embossed border with swirls plus a gold rim.  If you're looking to complete your set of Moss Rose, please be very aware, this pattern was made by many different manufacturers through the years like: Bavarian, Sango, Fine China of Japan, Pompadour, Royal Sealy, Wales and others.  They all look similar with slight variations.  If that is not important to your collection efforts then you will find an extensive inventory of pieces, sizes and shapes in Moss Rose, some with different pattern names, such as this Old Rose, Royal Rose, etc., but they all go well together.  It's easy to complete a dinnerware set for four or more in this pattern is you're not concerned about the manufacturer or matching the patterns exactly.  If you're just looking for a pretty plate for a bedroom, bathroom or other wall decor, this one will not disappoint!

Norleans was a line of porcelain china and glass products started in 1949 by United China and Glass Company (UCAGO). United China and Glass was founded in 1850 in New Orleans by Abe Mayer.  The original company name was Abe Mayer & Co., it wasn't until the early 1930's that they changed the name to United China and Glass Company and became a distributor of dinnerware and glassware for Japan manufacturers (1932). There was a brief period where imports from Japan were suspended during WWII, but as soon as commerce with Japan was reinstated, they were back in business.  In 1949 United China contracted artist Eva Zeisel to create the "Norleans" shapes as part of the 100th anniversary celebration. United China and Glass was sold to Sammons Enterprises, a holding company, in 1962. UCAGO continued to manufacture the Old Rose pattern under their own brand name.

The Moss Rose pattern was named for an heirloom variety of rose, which became popular in the Victorian era.  Moss Rose was first introduced as a dinnerware/china pattern in the early 1800’s.   Believed to have originated in England the pattern became very popular, and because of its popularity, the pattern has been produced/copied by several companies.   Some of the most productive manufacturers were in England, France and Japan.  The popularity of this pattern declined in the early 1900’s but became popular again in post-war Japan as a popular American import up to the 1960’s.
